The national park of Pieniny was founded in 1967, it has 3750 hectares and consists of Pieniny and Spisska Magura mountain ranges. The greater part of the Pieniny mountain range is situated in the Polish territory and the Slovak part is in the north of the country.

The biggest attraction for tourist though, is rafting on the Dunajec river on wooden rafts leaving from the historical monument of Cerveny Klastor - the Red Monastery (the monastery of Carhusian order), along 9 km until a small village - Lesnica. From Lesnica it is possible to return to Cerveny Klastor on foot following the tourist path, with the rented bicycles or with the coach.

The territory of the Slovak Paradise is rich in natural beauties. In this national park there are narrow canyons, waterfalls, beautiful caves, gorges, paths. The rugged canyons could are passable thanks to ladders and chains that have been installed to carry hikers along dizzying heights over cascades and boulder-sterwn stream beds. The Hornad river during thousands of years created here the canyon called Prielom Hornadu, 7 km long, where it is possible to do rafting.

The most famous cave of the Slovak Paradise is the Dobsinska Ice Cave (Dobsinska ladova jaskyna) that it is icluded in the natural patrimony of the Unesco. The tourist paths carry the visitors of the national park to admire the attractive panorama of the rocky formations. Between the most beautiful sights there are the Tomasovsky view (Tomasovsky vyhlad) and the Needle (Ihla). The Mala Fatra mountain range (Low Fatra) with the extended one of 22.630 hectares were declared the National Park in 1988.The mountain range core is formed by granitoid rocks, the bigger part, however, is made from rocks of the envelope and sheet units, especially dolomites and limestone. The park is rich of flora and fauna. As for fauna, there is bear, lynx, otter, eagle, eagle owl, grouse and others.

The Mala Fatra mountain range is uniforms in two parts: the first part calls Krivanska Fatra, whose the highest point is the top of Velky Krivan-1709 meters elevation above sea level. In this part of the national park is situated the fascinating Vratna valley. It is the biggest centre for tourism, skiing and recreation in Mala Fatra. In the Vratna valley is also located the picturesque Stefanova village. Between the most beautiful places of Mala Fatra there are: the system of gorges with the waterfalls - Horne and Dolne Diery, Nove Diery, Skalne mesto ("the Rock Town") a group of rock formations.

The second part of the Mala Fatra mountain range calls Lucanska Fatra - the highest point is the top of Velka Luka - 1476 m above the sea level. Also in this part there are very good tourist and skiing possibilities. On the slopes of the Velka Luka there are the ski runs of the Martinske hole Ski center. It is very renowned and attended skiing location.

High Tatras are the only truly alpine mountains in Eastern Europe and one of the smallest high mountain ranges in the world. The National Park encompasses the three mountain ranges of the region, The High Tatras, The Western Tatras and Belianske Tatras (The White Tatras).
This park is the oldest national park in Slovakia, was created in 1948. The national park is situated in the north part of Slovakia and extends for 74.111 hectares. The highest peak of the High Tatra is the Gerlach mount, 2655 m above sea level.

Many villages under the Tatras have a long tradition as a recreation or spa centers. There are numerous sanatoriums, health centres, cure houses and spa hotels that are specialize in healing lung disease and respiratory disorders.

The highest settlement in the High Tatras is Strbske Pleso (1335 meters above sea level) originally formed around an almost 20 hectare lake. This settlement was founded as the center of tourism and later new curative houses, recreation facilities and a top sport complex were built. Other important health and tourist centres are Stary Smokovec (1010m), Tatranska Lomnica (850m), Tatranska Polianka (1000m), Vysne Hagy (1100m), Zdiar (895).

In the national park of the High Tatras there are alpine lakes, valleys waterfalls, a various tourist paths and the rocky peaks. There are possibilities to climbe, to do trekking, cycling, skiing, snowbording, and to do skialpimism.

The national park is rich in flora and fauna. There are the chamois, bears, boars, marmots, wolf, lynx, deers, fox, eagles. All the animals are protected by the law.

The Highs Tatras together with the Polish part had been declarants by the UNESCO in 1993 the Tatra Biospheric Preserve.
