Currently Slovakia is divided into 8 regions and 79 administrative districts. This division of the regions came into force in 1996. The regions are concentrated around the largest cities in Slovakia.
The largest region is the administrative region of Banska Bystrica. The smallest region for extension is the region of Bratislava, but it is also the region with higher population density. The largest number of inhabitants living in the region of Kosice and the region of Trnava has fewer inhabitants than all other regions.

The Slovak Republic is situated in the Central Europe. The Capital City Bratislava is the biggest city in Slovakia and it has a strategic position for the business, but it has started also to be an interesting turistic destination thanks to its vicinity to three other important European capitals: Vienna, Budapest and Prague.
