Wooden church in Svaty KrizThe Wooden "articulated" evangelical church in Svaty Kriz belongs to one of the largest wooden buildings in Central Europe.
History of the church revealed to us the history of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the region of Liptov. At the beginning of the 16th century, the reformist ideas will spread very quickly and Protestantism reached its peak in 1610. In the second half of the 17th century in the Austria-Hungarian Empire has reinforced the absolutist regime and this has led to repression of evangelical Protestantism.

During this cruel oppression, in 1678, began Kuruc uprising against the emperor. Rebel successes, as well as fear of the Turks forced the King Leopold I. to make concessions. In 1681 parliament convened in Sopron, which enacted 82 Articles. According to the article no. 26 has been granted the construction of the Protestant churches in Hungary. Churches had to stand on the outskirts of the village. According to this article, the churches were to be located on the outskirts of town. For their construction was to be used only wood and no other material. The churches could not have towers, bells and the revenue could not be turned towards the city.

The Svaty Kriz church was originally built in 1693 in the village of Paludza. The restructuring to its current appearance form in 1774 by master carpenter care of Joseph Lang. Although he did not know how to read or write the construction was completed in the same year. In connection with the construction of Water Works in the years 1974 to 1982 was dismantled and rebuilt in its original form in the village of Svaty Kriz.

Wooden church in Svaty KrizThe plan of the church with a length of 43 m has the form of the cross and has the capacity to about 6,000 visitors. The church has 12 doors and 72 windows, the inside enchants everyone with its baroque interior. Inside is a rare wooden Baroque altar from 1693 and also an interesting pulpit. The altar and pulpit were created by sculptor J. Lerch of Kezmarok. The church organ is the work of J. Podmanický from Banská Štiavnica and was made in 1760. The chandelier was made in 1780 by the Venetian glass.

Apart from the church, the independent wooden tower that served as bell tower is a harmonious complex. The tower was built in 1781 after the publication of the Edict of tolerance by the Emperor Joseph II. It is 19 meters high. Current bells are from the years 1921 to 1922 and is called Faith, Hope and Charity.

The "articulated" wooden church was declared on 23 march 1963 a cultural monument.

HronsekThe articular wooden church in Hronsek was built in baroque style between 1725 and 1726. More late it was restored, but it has preserved the original character of the church, built without to use the iron nails.

In the church are typical Scandinavian and Germans architecture elements. To the inside are situated an organ of 1763, remained conserved very until today, the pulpit and the altar from the 18th century with wooden columns. The churches has seating capacity of 1100. On the roof of the church a rooster is lies, symbol of the reformed church.

In 2008, along with seven wooden churches of the Slovak part of Carpathian Mountain Area, it was included on the UNESCO's Word Heritage List.

POTOKY

The wooden church consecrated to Saint Paraskieva is of 1773. On the tower are situated the "onions" in gothic style covered by wooden shingles, to whose summit are present the decorated crosses. Nearby the church it was built the bell tower, inside it is situated the bell of 1839. In the interior of the church dominates the wooden iconostasis of 1773 with three tiers of icons. In the middle of the iconostasis is a tsar door with rich decorated wood-carvings.

LADOMIROVA

The Wooden church in LadomirovaWooden Church of eastern rite is consecrated to Archangel Michael and was built in 1742 without use of any nails. Inside the church in the western part of the nave is situated the small choir-loft, with a wooden windowsill. The iconostasis and the altar are date to 18th century. The tower and the cupolas are finished with onion-shaped spires and decorative crosses. The area of the church is put into a log fence with a interesting gate.


THE OPEN AIR MUSEUM SVIDNIK – SKANZEN

The Open Air Museum - The Wooden church in Nova Polianka The Open Air Museum in Svidnik - The Wooden church in Nova PoliankaThis sacred wooden construction is of 1766 and in origin was consecrated to Saint Paraskieva. In 1986 it was transferred from the NOVA POLIANKA village to the Open-Air museum in Svidnik. The interior walls of the original church were decorated by frescos. The iconostasis from the first part of the 18th century is not the original one, it was placed to its inside after the reconstruction of the church.

SEMETKOVCE

This wooden Church is a typical three-part, log building, consecrated to Archangel Michael. It was built in 1752. Its sanctuary and nave are covered with two-hipped roofs with little conical spires. Nearby the church is anewer wooden belfry with a pyramid-shaped roof. In the sanctuary are some remains of wall paintings and the iconostasi of the 18th century. The area of the church is put into a log fence covered by the wooden tile roof.

MIROLA

Wooden Church of eastern rite consecrated to the Protection of The Mother of God is of 1770. The church dominates on the eastern slope of the village. The construction is a typical three-part, log building and its hipped roofs are finished with onion-shaped spires and forged iron crosses. The roof and the towers of the church are covered with wooden shingles. The interior decorations and the iconostasis are dated to 18th century.

KRAJNE CIERNO

The Wooden church in Krajne CiernoThe wooden Church consecrated to Saint Bazil the Great was built in the 18th century. It is the three-part log building with and the hipped roofs are topped with conical cupolas and forged crosses. Shingles were used to cover the exterior walls of the church, except for the tower which has the usual planking. The area of the church is put into a log fence with a shingle roof and a wooden gate. Inside the church is situated the iconostasis in baroque style of the 18th century and some paintings, like for example the icon of Archangel Michael, icon of Saint Nicolas, dated to 18th century.

BODRUZAL

The Wooden church in Bodruzal This wooden Church of eastern rite consecrated to Saint Nicolas was built in 1658 and dominates on the southern slope of the village. The construction is a typical three-part log building with a stone foundation. The sanctuary and nave are covered by a hipped roof, topped with small onion-shaped spires and forged iron crosses. The church is put into a log fence with a shingle roof. The interiors of the church is decorated in white-golden colour in the baroque style. On the northern side of the nave are some remains of wall paintings from the first half of 18th century and the iconostasis with the icons is from the end of 18th century.

PRIKRA

The Wooden church in Prikra The wooden Church of eastern rite consecrated to Archangel Michael, was built in 1777 on the northern slope of the village. The Wooden church in PrikraIts tower and three-hipped roofs over the nave and the sanctuary are topped with small onion spires and forged iron crosses. Inside the church are situated the iconostasis from the first half of 18th century, four candelstics in rococò style from the second half of the 18th century and some icons from the 17th century, like for example icons of St.Michael, St. Mandylion, St. Nicolas.

DOBROSLAVA

The wooden Church consecrated to Saint Paraskieva, was built in 1705 and restored in 1880. In 1932 the church was enlarged with two side chapels which caused a change of the original three - part groundplan to an unique five - part one (in the shape of across). The baroque interior of the church is from the 18th century. The iconostasis and the altar with the icons are of the first half of 18th century.

THE BARDEJOV SPA - MUSEUM OF FOLK ARCHITECTURE

The Open Air museum of Bardejov Spa - The Wooden church of ZbojIn the Open Air museum of Bardejov Spa are present two wooden churches. The first wooden church is devoted to St. Nicolas comes from the village of ZBOJ and was transferred here in 1967. The church is of 1706, consists of one nave, a sanctuary, babinec (a place for the women) and three towers to pyramidal shape. The more precious part of its interior is the iconostasis (part that separates the sanctuary from the rest of the church) in rococo style of 1766. The iconostasis of the 18th the century belongs to the most complete and precious iconostasis in rococo style in Slovakia. For the security reasons it is found in the Ikony exposure in the Saris museum in Bardejov. Between the most precious objects, it attracts the attention the double wooden cross, with the body painted from both the sides.
The Open Air museum of Bardejov Spa - The Wooden church of Mikulasova The second wooden church of comes from the MIKULASOVA village, was built in 1730 and was consecrated to the Protection of the Mother of God. This construction has three parts, and it is situated in the museum from 1931. For the security reasons the icons the icons were transferred to the Saris museum in Bardejov.

FRICKA

The Wooden church in FrickaIt is situated 20 km north-west from Bardejov. The Orthodox church of St. Archangel Michael was built in the 18th century. The log buildings consists of three parts and is covered with wooden shingles. The whole building is surrounded by the wooden fence. The iconostasis, which separates the altar part from the nave, is from 1830. The icons coming from the end of the 19th century are the part of it. The main altar where the Burying is presented, is from 1716. One of the three bells of the wooden church is of 1697.

HERVATOV

The Wooden church in HervatovIt is situated 10 km from Bardejov. This Roman-Catholic church of St. Francis of Asissi, built arround 1500 in gothic style is the oldest wooden church in Slovakia. The roomy church is of red spruce and yew. The whole roof is covered with shingles. The church consists of polygonal sanctuary, a nave, of a sacristy and of a tower. The nave interior from 1665 is richly adorned with wall-paintings with Latin citations from the Bible by of Andrej Hafcik. The most precious scenes are the scenes of Adam and Eve in the paradise, the fight between St. George and the dragon.

The Wooden church in HervatovTo the inside of the church are situated gothic tables of the main altar painted between 1460 and 1470, for example the tables of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Catharine of Siena, St. Barbara. There are also present other precious objects like the painting of the Last supper painted in 1653, a woodcut of Christ on the cross of 1710 and of St. George of 1741, a rococo candlestic, a goblet of 1739, a crib from the 19th century and one bell from 1753.

KRIVE

The Wooden church in KriveIt is situated 15 km to the west from Bardejov. This Greek-catholic wooden church consecrated to St. Luke the Evangelist, was built in 1826. The whole complex is built on the stone foundation. The roof is of shingles. During the reconstruction in the 20th century the building got a simple saddle roof, and so it lost its three-tower character. The small western tower completed with the cupola and the cross was added.

The Wooden church in KriveThe most precious parts to its inside are the decoration painted in red well conserved, that they frame the advanced part of the ceiling and the iconostasis to three file from the 18th century. Of the original iconostasis of the 17th century they are conserved, after to have been taken apart, some icons painted on the wood: icon of St. Archangel Michael, icon of the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan river, the icon of the Saviour. Very precious one is also the renaissance cross from the 17th century.

LUKOV

The Wooden church in LukovIt lies 20 km to the west of Bardejov. The orthodox church of St. Cosmos and St. Damian was built between the 1708 and 1709 in baroque-gothic style. It is wooden log building built on the stone foundation with three sections and covered with wooden shingles. From the architectural point of view the extended roofed space is unique. The church is situated on the higher part of the village. The iconostasis is not unifield. The upper part comes from 1736, the lower part from the second half of the 18th century. The most precious pictures in the church are: the painting representing the Universal Judgment of the end of the 16th century, Deesis of 1680 and several other icons from 17th century.

KOZANY

The Wooden church in Kozany It lies to south-east of Bardejov is found 13 km. The Greek-catholic wooden Church of Meeting Jesus with Simeon was built in 1698. It is three-part wooden log building built on the the low stone foundation covered with wooden shingles. The church consists altar room, the nave and the woman part. On the inner walls there are very precious wall paintings from 1793 - 1797. They show the scenes from Old and New Testament. The iconostasis from the 18th century is atypical. It has only two doors: the main czar door for the priest and only one deacon door for the priest's assistants. The bell of the church from 1406 is among the oldest Gothic dated bells in Eastern Slovakia.

TROCANY

The Wooden church in Trocany It lies 15 km to south from Bardejov. The Greek-catholic wooden church of St. Luke the Evangelist is situated in the center of the village. This wooden log building was built in 1739, uniform in three parts, based on stone foundations. The whole roof is covered with wooden shingles. To the inside of the church are found some precious objects from 17th and 18th centuries, for example: the complex of the icons from 17th century, the icons painted on the wood (of St. Luke the Evangelist of 1638, icons of the Crucifixion of 1634, St. Michael the Archangel of the 17th century) and a wooden poly chromed candlestick of the 18th century.

JEDLINKA

The Wooden church in Jedlinka It is situated 16 km to northeast from Bardejov. This orthodox church of the Protection of the Mother of God is of 1763. It is a typical three towered wooden sacral log building from the architectural point of view. The Wooden church in JedlinkaThe church consists of the sanctuary, one nave and the small anteroom. The whole roof is covered with wooden shingles. The most precious objects to its inside are: the main altar in the sanctuary from the beginning of 19th century, the rich decorated iconostasis from 18 th century belongs to the most complete and precious iconostasis in rococo style in Slovakia, icons of the Last supper, the Mother of God in the sanctuary, of St. Nicholas, of Hodegertria and very precious wooden candlesticks. In the church are found some very precious and well conserved liturgic books of the 17th century.
